Philadelphia Mayor Kenney and the Office of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy (OACCE) opened Philly Celebrates Jazz 2023, an annual celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month.
“Philadelphia is home to some of the most notable and groundbreaking figures in jazz history,” said Mayor Jim Kenney. – “By bringing people together to celebrate our jazz heritage, we pay tribute to the great contributions of the jazz community and appreciate the vibrant jazz scene that still thrives today.
Philly Celebrates Jazz 2023 will fill Philadelphia neighborhoods with traditional jazz music performances and interdisciplinary jazz programs such as live jazz opera performances, jazz-style parties, dance events, DJ sets, poetry nights and more.
“I’m so excited about this year’s Philly Celebrates Jazz, which is the largest we’ve hosted before the Covid pandemic,” said Kelly Lee, director of culture for the Office of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy. – This year, we’ve expanded our reach significantly in hopes of attracting more diverse performers, participants and venues. Of the recipients of Jazz Neighborhood Series 2023 funding, 47 percent are partners that OACCE has not worked with in more than four years.”
The kick-off event will launch the Philly Celebrates Jazz calendar, which will feature more than 100 jazz-related events throughout the city. The 2023 celebration includes:

Free jazz programs throughout the city, such as a walking tour of jazz history along South Street, a DJ set with dancers at The Trestle Inn, a screening of “Ray,” “Lovett Loves Jazz,” a concert series at the Lovett Library and more. Performers and event organizers include world-renowned bassist Jamaaldin Takuma and the Brotherhood Collective, Philadelphia Jazz Legacy Project, DJ lil’ dave, Connie Hahn, Snacktime and others. Television jazz programs in April
The OACCE Arts Access television program shows jazz throughout April. Philadelphians can watch Arts Access TV every Wednesday and Friday from 6-8 p.m. – 7 p.m. to see jazz performances, discussions with jazz musicians and more. Watch online at Phila.gov or on local Philadelphia channel 64 (GovTV).
